Implementing Effective Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports: Academic and Social-Emotional Prevention, Assessment, and Intervention
Wecome to Your MTSS Course: Home Page
The goal of every school is to maximize the academic and social, emotional, and behavioral progress, development, and proficiency of every student. While admirable, the reality is that not all students are successful even when taught by effective teachers. Indeed, some students struggle, are disengaged or unmotivated, or underperform or are consistently unsuccessful.
To address these students’ challenges, districts and their schools need effective multi-tiered systems of support. But federal law does not require them to use their state or federal MTSS framework—which often has numerous science-to-practice flaws that delay services or result in ineffective interventions for some students.
In fact, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) encourages districts to design and implement multi-tiered systems of support that address the individual needs of students using a continuum of early, strategic, or intensive science-to-practice services, supports, strategies, and/or interventions beginning in the general education classroom and using district personnel, resources, creativity, and flexibility.
This process begins in the general education classroom with effective differentiated instruction, classroom management, progress monitoring, and academic or social, emotional, or behavioral adjustments or interventions when needed.
This MTSS Course will guide you through the process—from district- and school-level design and implementation, to effective classroom instruction and management, to data-based problem-solving to determine why individual students are academically struggling or presenting with social-emotional challenges, to the multi-tiered interventions in these areas that will help these latter students be more successful.
